Fascist Judges: Hands OFF Abortion Pill
Women Need LEGAL ABORTION ON DEMAND AND WITHOUT APOLOGY to be free!
Wednesday May 17, a panel of judges from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals will review a decision by the federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk to completely ban mifepristone nationwide, a medication used in over half the abortions in this country. This decision has been partially blocked while it is being reviewed by the higher courts, but hangs like a sword over the lives of women across this country who need access to abortion to live full and free lives.
This assault on medication abortion nationwide is the latest and most far-reaching move by the Christian fascists anti-abortion fanatics since they succeeded in overturning abortion rights nationwide last year at the Supreme Court. They will not stop in their attempts to ban all abortions everywhere unless we stop them.
Kascmaryk’s ruling was saturated with the language of a Handmaid’s Tale theocracy, equating abortion to the killing of children and resurrecting the 1873 Comstock Act, an arcane “chastity” ban that could lay the basis for criminalizing abortion nationwide.
While we don’t know exactly what will happen , no one should sit back and wait to see how the powers-that-be will respond.
The Biden administration is fighting this in the courts – but the highest court, the Supreme Court, is packed with fascists who ripped away the constitutional right to abortion last year. Biden says: “[T]he only way to stop those who are committed to taking away women’s rights and freedoms in every state is to elect a Congress who will pass a law restoring Roe versus Wade” – but the Democrats had 50 years to codify abortion rights and they never did! On top of that, the fascist Republicans attempted a coup on Jan 6, 2021. They illegitimately expelled Black state representatives in Tennessee. In response to Trump’s recent arrest, Tucker Carlson said its “not time to give up your AR-15s.” Counting on these fascists to respect a meaningful election they lose is delusional.
We must rely on ourselves!
Now is the time to raise YOUR voice in opposition. Take to the streets. Disrupt business as usual. Mobilize the one force that can compel those in power to back off their assault on abortion rights – the masses of people standing up in our hundreds and soon thousands and then millions. Near midnight Wednesday April 12, the 5th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals dramatically restricted women’s access to mifepristone, a drug used in more than 50% of abortions in this country. Among the illegitimate restrictions put on mifepristone:
* It can now only be prescribed by doctors, no longer by nurses and other healthcare workers
* Women must show up in person at the doctor’s office to get the pill, no longer able to get it through telemedicine or a pharmacy
* Mifepristone can only be prescribed up until 7 weeks into pregnancy, no longer up until 10 weeks. 7 weeks is long before many women even know they are pregnant.
