Make a Statement at the
2022 Tony Awards
Overturn Roe? HELL NO!
To Everyone Attending the Tonys:
I am writing to ask you to use your appearance at the Tonys to show that you refuse to accept the Supreme Court decimating women’s fundamental right to abortion and to inspire and challenge others to stand up and fight now.
The Supreme Court’s cruel plan to repeal Roe v. Wade and wipe out the right to abortion is a major attack which must be DEFEATED NOW – this June – before it is hammered into law.
This could be done if people in our millions make clear, through massive non-violent resistance, that we will bring the gears of society to a grinding halt before we allow the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
I’d like to strategize with you about how to impact the Tonys in the most compelling and dramatic way possible. Ideas include:
** Wear the Green Bandana on the red carpet and all night. This is the powerful symbol of fierce struggle for abortion rights which originated in Argentina and spread throughout Latin America and worldwide. Post a pic of yourself with it now using the hashtag #Green4Abortion.
** Invite one of the very young women who has been leading student walk-outs and/or myself to walk the red carpet to make a visual statement together. I have some ideas we could discuss.
** In interviews, and if you win an award, speak to the responsibility of the artist and all of us to Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights NOW to STOP the Supreme Court from overturning Roe. It is far harder to win a right back once it is taken, then to defend it while we still have it.
The repeal of a previously recognized Constitutional right has never been done before. This would be a massive attack on women, one-half of humanity, that on top of everything else would fall hardest on Black, Latina, and other particularly oppressed peoples. Not only that; it would put birth control and the rights of LGBTQ people in the crosshairs next.
You have a unique opportunity to be heard with a message that can inspire and strengthen others in standing up! For any of us to remain silent at this dangerous hour is to further the unconscionable dynamic of otherwise good people acquiescing to a grave crime.
Let’s work together to make a big difference in calling forward the fighting spirit of millions to STOP the Supreme Court from giving the state the right to hijack women’s bodies and force them to have children against their will with all the violence and dehumanization that entails. Let’s give all we’ve got to win a huge victory for women and girls for generations to come.

Bring a student leader in the bloody pants
Invite one of the very young women who has been leading student walk-outs and/or one of our initiators to walk the red carpet to make a visual statement together. Mark Ruffalo joined a walk out and spoke as to why he did in this video.
Why the green bandana?
WE MUST DO WHAT WOMEN IN ARGENTINA, MEXICO AND COLOMBIA HAVE DONE. For generations, abortion was criminalized in those countries. Then, women took up the Green Bandana. Through courageous, relentless protest, they DE-CRIMINALIZED ABORTION!
We, too, must change what is possible here through our struggle. Show solidarity with our sisters in Latin America and with women across this country. Wear Green & Rise Up! We need to be spreading the GREEN WAVE that does not stop until we defeat this war on women!

Who is Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights?
In early January of 2022, Merle Hoffman, Lori Sokol, Sunsara Taylor and other initiators of RiseUp4AbortionRights.org came together as individual long time activists out of their shared recognition that the Supreme Court was on track to decimate abortion rights. They issued a Statementwhich read, in part, “We refuse to let the U.S. Supreme Court deny women’s humanity and decimate their rights! Join us in fighting for Abortion On Demand and Without Apology!… The violent subjugation of half of society must not be accommodated, excused, downplayed, or surrendered to. IT MUST BE STOPPED!”

women from the abortion rights movement in argentina
Cannes’ red carpet continued its political streak Saturday, with a pro-choice demonstration on the red carpet ahead of the premiere of Argentine director Juan Solanas’ abortion documentary Let It Be Law (Que Sea Ley),
The demonstration brought together 60 women and activists from Argentina who unfurled a green sign and flags. Green is the signature color of the pro-choice movement in Argentina.

wear #Green4Abortion
We can’t be defeatest, or go along with it. We can’t be thinking about plan B and plan C, we gotta think about stopping this from happening now! It hasn’t happened yet! We still have a chance and we’ve got to use that chance and start this green wave. Just like the women in Argentina, we can defeat them and we can start a resistance and we can show defiance by wearing green.
