THURSDAY, NATIONWIDE COAT-HANGER DAY TO SOUND THE ALARM ABOUT THE SUPREME COURT’S THREAT TO ABORTION RIGHTS AND THE KENTUCKY BAN, AND BUILD FOR THE WEEK OF ACTION MAY 8-14.
This Thursday, April 21, nationwide we will spread thousands of wire coat-hangers with messages sounding the alarm about the abortion rights emergency and the need to join in.
Why wire coat-hangers?
Before abortion was legal, many women untwisted wire hangers land inserted them into their vaginas all the way up into their uterus in a desperate attempt to abort unwanted pregnancies. Countless women died in this way. Since then, the wire coat-hanger has become an international symbol to graphically illustrate the real-world life-and-death stakes of safe, legal abortion access to women.
We want every single individual and chapter of RiseUp4AbortionRights across this country to be part of this.
Hang the coat-hangers with the emergency message on college campuses and in high schools, at busy transit hubs, in public parks or areas of town with heavy foot-traffic, put them around major landmarks and tourist attractions. Be creative. Go big. Get attention and stir controversy.
By acting all together on this common day with a creative message that captures the life-and-death stakes for women and girls and all people who can become pregnant, we aim not only to compel people who see these coat-hangers in real life to stop and take notice, but to break into the media and viral social media with our message that now is the time for everyone to act to stop the U.S. Supreme Court from decimating abortion rights!

Monday and Tuesday: Activate volunteers.
Reach out to everyone in your area who has signed up or volunteered to take part on Wednesday and/or Thursday’s actions.
Wednesday: Attach a green flier to every coat-hanger.
Print out these fliers that explain what the hanger is and the emergency we face and attach them to each hanger as shown in these pictures. This takes time, but can be a great activity for new volunteers and a lot of fund if undertaken together.
Note: We strongly recommend you print your fliers on bright green paper, to spread the color green as a statement and symbol for abortion rights. However, if you cannot find green paper don’t let that stop you, just print on white paper.
Thursday: Mobilize as many people as possible to spread the hangers all over in attention-grabbing ways starting early morning and all day.
Starting early in the morning, mobilize as many people as possible to take the coat-hangers and spread them in different parts of your city.
This can be done in decentralized ways – with people taking coat-hangers out on their own in different areas of town or on campuses where they are. It can also be done in collective ways where people come together to ensure that key locations are absolutely overwhelmed with these coat-hangers in ways that make a statement. Collectively around the country, this will add up in its impact.

Be sure to take a lot of pictures of the coat-hangers hanging in different places. Where possible, get pictures of people stopping to look at them. Post these on social media throughout the day using the hashtags #Green4Abortion and #RiseUp4AbortionRights. And/or send them in to: [email protected]
